Bajra Sandhi Monument building process was also a kind of a struggle, with the process started in 1981 but stuck for several years. The architecture is very unique, taking the shape of Bajra or Genta, a bell that is used by Hindu Priests during religious ceremonies. It is also a symbol of the bond between males and females that creates prosperity according to the epic that tells the story of the Gods' struggle to get the Water of Eternity. Every statue and each carving in the monument compound has its own meaning. Bajra Sandhi Monument symbolizes Mount Mandara where, according to the epic Mahabarath, the Gods had a battle with giants fighting for the Water of Eternity. The architecture also symbolizes nationalism with 17 main gates, 8 pillars and the monument reaching a height of 45 meter, to reflect 17 August 1945 the independence day of the country.

To get to Bajra Sandhi Monument is easily accessible and lies on the main road in a strategic area, which is set right in the centre of the Renon Square (otherwise locally referred to simply as Puputan Renon). It can be reached by taxi or by hiring a scooter, though many visitors do find it more convenient to visit the monument as part of Denpasar Heritage City Tour. If you are coming from the Sanur area, it only takes 15 minutes by car with a 2,5-kilometer distance. However, if you are coming from Kuta or Seminyak area, then it will take 30 minutes by car and 15 kilometers distance.

Bajra Sandhi Monument History

Bajra Sandhi Monument was built in 1987 and officially opened in 2003 which is comprising of 33 diorama depicting the journey history from a period of prehistory (300.000 S.M) what it's human being still go about and very base on the nature until the period of filling the independence (1950-1975) where Bali Island is built in all areas like politics, economic, and social cultural. By knowing and comprehending the journey history, soul, and spirit of Bali People struggle from time to time, it is expected that the tightening of the spirit and culture will increase Bali tourism.

The existence of physical buildings is strongly related to the meaning of Hinduism philosophy, namely Yoni colossus. The monument is likely a colossus device, meanwhile the building is based on yoni. On the other hand, the Yoni colossus is also describing the story of twiddling Mandhara Giri at Ksirarnawa which is taken from a passage of Adi Parwa (Hindu’s Book). Two philosophies underpin the monument. The first ties to Hinduism, with representations of yoni, a feminine symbol for regeneration and the process of creation. The second retells the story of Mandara Giri Mountain in Ksirarnawa (milky ocean), the first chapter in the Mahabharata, an ancient Indian epic.

The story tells of gods and giants joining together to “twist” Mount Mandara in the Ksirarnawa in the hope of extracting the holy Water of Eternity (Tirta Amerta). Other symbols at the monument represent the date the Japanese surrendered, August 17, 1945. These are the 17 main gates, the eight pillars and the fact that the monument stands 45 meters (148 feet) tall. Climb the stairs to the top of the tower to reach the chamber with a 360-degree view. Admire the rotating exhibits, which often include photographs and paintings, in the exhibition room.
